Cialis sales at online pharmacy eDrugstore.MD jumped by 15.4% in January 2008 compared to the previous month. eDrugstore.MD spokesman Ron Collins says the rise in sales coincides with the FDA's approval of once-a-day use of Cialis by men with erectile dysfunction.
Previously, Cialis was prescribed to be taken only as needed prior to anticipated sexual activity. It was dubbed the "weekend pill" because it's the only ED oral treatment that can last up to 36 hours. (Viagra and Levitra, the two main competitors, last up to four hours.)
With the new FDA approval on January 8, 2008, Cialis becomes the first oral prescription pill for erectile dysfunction that can be be taken daily for ongoing treatment. The active ingredient (tadalafil) remains the same but the recommended dosage is decreased from the previous 10mg or 20mg to 2.5mg or 5mg daily.
Collins of eDrugstore.MD says this dosing option gives men with erectile dysfunction new freedom to enjoy sex in a more spontaneous manner, similar to men without ED. He says the news may be responsible for the significant increase in Cialis sales at eDrugstore.MD since the announcement.
"Ever since Cialis came on the market in 2003, it's given Viagra a run for its money even though Viagra continues to outsell it. This change allowing men to take Cialis daily is a huge development. We predict more fluctuations in the balance of sales between Cialis, Viagra and Levitra in the months ahead as this news gets out to more doctors and patients."
The manufacturer, Eli Lilly and Company, says the cost of taking the treatment daily will be about the same as taking Cialis twice a week on an as-needed basis. Collins says that's also good news for eDrugstore.MD's online pharmacy customers and Cialis users everywhere.
"Now they get the advantage of popping a pill once a day to enjoy an active sex life without having to plan ahead. And the new dosing won't cost them more. It's a win-win situation for patients and for the industry."
